Retail Rant: World Boards Owner Jay Moore—Is There Hope For Real Shops? | TransWorld Business

The industry as we know may change for the worst. Take some time and read this article and then think about how your purchase is essentially a vote to choose how you want to see this industry in the future.

Happy Holidays

Santa is working early and bringing the snow on Christmas eve. I’ll have to work to find the untracked after the work week is over. Get out there on the mountain, spend time with your family and think about the last year. This is something I have to do better and am excited for 2013. there is only so much time so make sure you are doing what you need to be doing to get where you want to end up.

Style

Everyone has a style, not everyone watches themselves on video enough to modify their style. But what I have found each person’s style always is a perfect match. Snowboarding mirrors life in the form of style. You can watch someone take a few runs and have a pretty good idea what that person is all about.

Are they bombing as fast as they can or are they searching for little hits all over the mountain? Can they straight air or do they grab tail fish?

Just some random thoughts from the last chair lift ride. What does your style say?

Business Models for Boards

SO its old news but Burton killed several of the companies it purchased: Forum, Special Blend, Four Square were the big ones. Burton decided to streamline their business and focus on what used to make them money. Taking a look at what Burton has been doing the last few years, one can see that their direction wasn’t the best line.

Burton has been tying to capitalize on the flying tomato’s mainstreaminess. The shawn white collection is some of the cheapest gear Burton makes. Coats, boards, pants all pretty cheap and aimed towards the young’unz. No doubt about it White is one the best in the world at traveling sideways on snow and street. But the other guy whose is in the top 5 is Travis Rice.

Lib Tech makes the TRICE board. It is not cheap, and not for the young’unz. It is one of the most technical boards Mervin makes, and it comes with the price tag as well. How may TRICE boards have you seen on the hills compared to the  WHITE??

As always the lesson is to sell high end products with high end price tags or you’ll end up restructuring and somehow making comforters???

Holiday Season

After I said this blog was restarting, I went on vacation to eat Turkey, watch football and hot tub  at Chico HotSprings with my family, and subsequently didn’t write anything. But I do have one excuse, I caught the death flu and have been recovering since. I was able to catch this super stomach bug and give it to my child, wife, mother, and mother in law in that order. The first 4 affected were able to enjoy some Thanksgiving dinner, but not my wife’s mom. Getting sick sucks especially when you just pass it around to everyone else. But enough of that.

As for the snowboarding, none was had. My board rode on the top of my car for 10 days, but didn’t touch any snow. I wasn’t able to fit riding the early season snow in Montana in the schedule. But I did pick up some new gear. I went with the GNU Argo “step in” bindings. Last step ins I used were the K2 Clickers on my very first snowboard, and those almost made me stick with skis. So lets hope these work better.

I was able to check out the shop for the @PHARNORTHCREW in Bozeman. American sourced, cut, designed apparel. The wife and I will be warmer, hopefully there will be some more collaboration with the pharnorth guys in the future.

One thing for sure though. Montana skies are 33.7% bigger than Utah skies and 23% bigger than Idaho’s, I measured it. Seeing the stars in Big Sky is absolutely awesome. The little man is about to crawl any day, his battle with the stomach bug was the shortest of anyone and it didn’t slow him down in his progression.

Hope everyone else had a fantastic Thanksgiving, more on the lines of the Patriots and not the Jets.

snowsAy 2.0

This is my blog. It has been sorely neglected. SnowsAy is going to be about brands that are making noise but not quite fully mainstream. It will have some news about the brands, deals, and new products.

It will be my tracking tool for days up on the hill. Once it gets rolling I’ll have gear  reviews and resort reviews. I also have a job, a wife and a little man, so I won’t be up on the hill every day but I plan on sharing my thoughts on everyday things. It’ll still be a mountain blog but it’ll have a mixture of real life. So I’ll do my best to keep pumping away at this sucker, and I hope you enjoy.

Oktoberfest 2012

It’s the last week of Oktoberfest! The celebration of beer is held every year in Munich, Germany, and draws a crowd of nearly 6 million people, making it the world’s largest fair. Festival-goers feast on traditional German foods and imbibe large quantities of Oktoberfest beer, a special type of beer that must be brewed within the city limits of Munich. It’s estimated that during the 16-day celebration, almost 7 million liters of beer are consumed.
